I'm very happy to confirm an important break-trough in the 3D vegetation development. I have successfully created a 3D tree with 100% 3D structure. the .im file is 1300kb which Trainz can import without problems.

I will soon post pics of the example tree.....

As promised, I have got the first pics. They are raken inside TC, but the texture is puse b/w and they should not show any alpha bugs in TRS 09.

It takes some time to create those trees, but I guess mass producing will speed things up a bit. I will experiment more to get an ideal poly/visual quality level. And most important: As these have beeen made in 3DS max, I will render a blue print from the 3D model to be used at different LOD levels....

More info upcoming when I have more relevant info....

The best part of the tecnique used is the ability to mass produce several random trees, looking quite different, but with the same texture and 'main' shape i.e. tree family....new model..

Nice, now when you look from above, the tree will still look real

The trees released for testing was not made with Normal mapping (too litlle time to get them ready).

However, testing with normal mapping shows a jump in the right direction. I'll post pics here soon...

Not enough superlatives to describe how good these trees look.

THX Rob :D :D :D

Just an update. I have used some days trying to reduce the poly and at the same time improve the new trees. I belive many Trainz 04/06 and TC users would like access to 3D trees as well as Trainz 2009 users.

I'm working to make paralell set's of 3D trees for both 09 native mode and for 04/06 and TC. The LOD will be replaced by progressive mesh (for non 09 version).

The poly reducing is so successfull that the 'lowest' LOD will be in 3D, and the use use of crossed billboards is history. This will improve the visual quality a bit. The time to produce the new trees have been reduced furter as I now use the same 'blueprint' for the 'low' LOD.

I hope to have something ready soon and will post previews as soon as I have them ready...
