Just an update. I have used some days trying to reduce the poly and at the same time improve the new trees. I belive many Trainz 04/06 and TC users would like access to 3D trees as well as Trainz 2009 users.

I'm working to make paralell set's of 3D trees for both 09 native mode and for 04/06 and TC. The LOD will be replaced by progressive mesh (for non 09 version).

The poly reducing is so successfull that the 'lowest' LOD will be in 3D, and the use use of crossed billboards is history. This will improve the visual quality a bit. The time to produce the new trees have been reduced furter as I now use the same 'blueprint' for the 'low' LOD.

I hope to have something ready soon and will post previews as soon as I have them ready...

Jan on the 2004/2006/TC versions still use LOD meshes. PM meshes are very old and utter naff, even in 2004 upwards. Also normal mapping and alpha maps work in 2004 upwards. Might save you a bit of time in the old conversions and what have you.

Rob

THX Rob :D

I have 2006/Tc and 2009 installed, my 'favorite' is TC. TC take the best from the previous versions and with the upgraded signaling system and the very nice routes it's no doubt my favorite version of Trainz.

Looking at all the screenshots taken from 04/06 and TC, the blended alpha's creates a very realistic scenery compared to TRs 2009. Some kind of expansion/plugins for the 2009 edition's is needed to add more realism into the scenery.

I'm testing a combination of 3D and blended alpha right now for pre 2009 versions and i will post shots of it when I have someting ready....

Very great ! I follow your work from France and I must say : Congatulations Jan for this amazing job.

Looks much better than SpeedTree. Lot of details in the leafs and trunks looks real.

Scots Pine, my favorite tree. This is the most common tree where I live.

Shot from a new set of payware trees. The set will contain 10 different Scots Pine trees at different height. A 'billboarded' version will be uploaded to DLS (to avoid missing kuid). The user can then decide to 'upgrade' to the 3D version.

Hi Jan,

They look very good. I understand that these 3D trees will be payware.

From which site will they be available? Will they all have their Billboarded counterpart from which it could be possible with the TS2009/20010 tool to swap them?

I’m asking because I’m currently testing for the French modular route builder team EPM, map compatibility with 2009 SP4 and 2010 (I’m Auran beta tester). EPM only use freeware content.

http://www.europlaymodule.eu/ForumTRS/

They are some trees and bushes issues as you may expect. It took 2 years for the EPM creators to build the first 12 sets of maps. They are reluctant to do it again.
Based on your new 2D/3D concept a map could be build with free 2D sets and later on TS2010 user could update to 3D payware.

What will be the type of trees of your sets.

Thierry

Hi Thierry!

The site is under construction and will not be up before january sometime, I'll get back with link to the site.

Correct, and a 'free' 2D version of every tree (the lod2) uploaded to DLS. The 3D payware trees will be with a higher kuid # and automaticly replace the 2D trees. This way, route builders can use my trees without missing kuid's.

I can only answer for myself, I'm aware of different issues when building up a payware site. Only future will tell how things go  ...I'm just having fun and do what I like to do, that's the most important issue for me

I have to go through the Speedtree library when it comes out. I will try to fill gaps and make a 'pin pointed' selection of trees and other vegetation for the user to choose from. The trees in shots over is part of the first set I'll be making, Scots pine is one of my favorite, it grows everywhere here in SE Norway. i also believe it's a common tree many other places.

There will be trees from Europe and North America as the main 'concept'. Next I will soon be making Gum trees as they are common down under. I will try to get as many species ready as I can until january, and then the site will be expanded as new species get ready. Most vegetation will be available in seasonal colors (if not evergreen's)
